Global Village

Habitat for Humanity Canada, in addition to working with affiliates across the country such as Habitat Mississauga, operates a Global Village Program that has sent hundreds of volunteers around the world to help build homes.

Teams of 10-16 people travel to all five continents to work alongside local residents, assisting as directed. Volunteers do not need prior building experience – rather, a sense of adventure and a willingness to fit in. Indeed it can be a life changing experience, providing an opportunity to gain a greater understanding of development issues, another culture and, just as importantly, oneself!

For participants in a Global Village team build are more than tourists. They find themselves welcomed into the community by their hosts and introduced to the local culture as guests. And when people work and laugh together, share stories and make friends, they gain a whole new perspective.

“Anybody who has ever been on a Global Village team will tell you that you get more from the experience than you give,” says Habitat Mississauga volunteer John Roe who has been on many GV trips. “Not only do you gain much physical satisfaction from helping families build their dream home, but it can also be a very emotional experience when you part company.”

John, who led the first ever Canadian team to Kyrgyzstan acknowledges that “Going to a former USSR republic is not your usual tourist destination, but for those who like to go off the beaten track it was a truly memorable experience!”
